Living Alone Guide Part 9: Delivery Tips
What to Do When You're Not Home
Working all day, packages coming all day...
If you work during the day, receiving packages is a real challenge. I've had packages marked as delivered when I wasn't home, and some even got lost. Really frustrating when your building doesn't have a concierge.
After a year of living alone, here are my delivery survival tips.
1. Solutions for Missed Deliveries
Option 1: Concierge/Front Desk
- If your building has one, set it as default
- Add delivery note: "Please leave with concierge"
- Pick up after work
Option 2: Parcel Lockers
- Many apartments have smart lockers now
- You get a code via text/app
- 24/7 pickup available
Option 3: Leave at Door
- Add note: "Safe to leave at door"
- Not recommended for expensive items - theft risk
- Request delivery photo as proof
Option 4: Pickup Points
- Some carriers offer pickup at local stores
- Select pickup option when ordering
- Collect during store hours
I mainly use concierge + parcel lockers combo. Door delivery is risky for lost packages...
2. Using Delivery Notes Effectively
Good Delivery Notes
- "Please leave with building concierge, Apt #XXX"
- "If not home, leave at door. Photo please"
- "Use parcel locker if available"
- "Please call before delivery (XXX-XXX-XXXX)"
Safety Tips
- Don't write "lives alone" or "single person" on address
- Consider using initials instead of full name
3. Food Delivery Tips
Single Portion Ordering
- Minimum orders: Sometimes delivery fee costs more than food
- Tip: Order enough for next meal too
- Discounts: Use first-order deals and coupons
Storing Leftovers
- Refrigerate if not eating immediately
- Noodles get soggy - eat those fast
- Reheat properly next day
Using Delivery Apps
- Compare prices across multiple apps
- Consider pickup if there's a discount
- Check reviews carefully (focus on photo reviews)
4. Extended Absence
When Traveling
- Reschedule expected deliveries
- Pause subscription boxes
- Ask trusted person to collect important packages
5. Safe Package Receiving
Don't Reveal You Live Alone
- Use initials or gender-neutral names
- When asked, imply someone else will receive
- Avoid late-night deliveries
Contactless Delivery
- Prefer "leave at door" option
- Use intercom only, don't open door
- Wait for driver to leave before collecting
Safety first! Especially at night, verify it's actually a delivery person.
6. Smart Shopping
Online Shopping Tips
- Free shipping: Don't buy unnecessary items just to hit free shipping
- Subscriptions: Subscribe & save for regular essentials
- Reviews: Always check verified purchase reviews
Early Morning Delivery
- Great for fresh groceries
- Collect before work
- Be careful with frozen items in summer
7. Checklist
When Ordering
- ☐ Write detailed delivery instructions
- ☐ Set backup delivery location
- ☐ Confirm contact number
Food Delivery
- ☐ Compare prices across apps
- ☐ Check for coupons/deals
- ☐ Read reviews
